Home “Open Beta” launch will be similar to Gmail

PlayStation 3

Sony’s long-promised PLAYSTATION 3 virtual world Home is still on track for a 2008 release, although it’ll likely stay in beta for awhile.

Susan Panico, senior director of the PLAYSTATION Network, spoke to Wired about the availability of Home. Saying that the software is still due for release at the end of the year, Panico noted that the “rollout will be similar to GMail,” describing what will launch this year as an “open, working beta.”

With all that being said, having a system implemented for inviting like Gmail had isn’t a bad thing. The question becomes how long will it stay in that beta form before its literally open to everyone. What is to be noted is that GMail, after 4 years, is still in beta form. Let’s hope Sony can do a little better than that with Home.
