KILLZONE 2 Uses 4 1/2 of PS3’s 6 Cell Chip Cores

A few days ago, 1UP revealed that the August Issue of EGM features a preview of Guerrilla Games' upcoming KILLZONE 2.
The 12 page feature reveals more on Guerrilla's sequel. The feature mentions that KILLZONE 2 currently uses four and a half of the PLAYSTATION 3's six cores of the cell chip.
Guerrilla Games’ Technical Directer, Michiel van der Leeuw also mentions, “Sony basically has an international forum for sharing character technology, animation tools and graphics shaders. ~ We’ve even taken a few tricks directly from the Resistance guys at Insomniac, and we’ve even been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica.”
Make sure you pick up the August Electronic Gaming Monthly for even more on the game.
[EGM’s Killzone 2 Feature Reveals Cell Usage & More]

“been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica”
god like graphics for GOW III confirmed :D
If they use only 4,5 SPEs and can achieve such a beautiful real-time graphics…I wonder how real the graphics can be if it fully uses the 6 SPEs inside Cell.
Sounds great, but I thought the PS3 had 7 cores…
This made me laugh because in my opinion, graphics wise with the stuff that’s going on screen and whatnot in Killzone 2, MGS4 kinda pales in comparison and that’s said to use the ps3 to its “full power”.
We also can’t forget that Uncharted used only 30% of the PS3’s full power and that game looks amazing in its own right.
@CRONICK
Actually i believe the PS3 has 8 cores, but one is disabled and another is used by the Operating System, so only 6 is actually available for use.
I still don’t have faith in Killzone 2. Just seems like another FPS with beefed up graphics. Maybe E3 will change my feelings for it.
Actually it’s 7 cores but one is reserved for the OS. Either way it’s nice to know that there’s still some juice left in the PS3 and yet Killzone 2 looks unbelievable and better than anything the 360 is pumping out now with the only exception being Gears of War.
That game still looks awesome although it had some texture issues.
As for the GoW team being mentioned, holy friggin’ crap. I can’t wait to see something from that team. Actually I’m REALLY Jonesin’ for some Team Ico news.
You honestly feel that Gears of War looks that good? Sorry but even MGS4 looks better than Gears of War. Even GeOW2 doesn’t look like it progressed much.
I’m pretty sure you’re right about 8 cores and 1 being reserved for the OS. This kinda seems like a typo that it has 6 cores…
I feel that technically speaking that Uncharted is still the most impressive graphics wise even with MGS4 out and these soon to be titles. Killzone 2 and GeOW for example use a pretty limited color palette, which puts less strain on the whole system. However, Uncharted uses a wide range of colors and much more resources is needed and thus it only uses 30%? Wow.
[...] Killzone 2 Using 4 1/2 Cells So in the August Issue of EGM there will be 12 page feature of Guerrilla Games’ upcoming KILLZONE 2. The feature will reveal more about the game such as that it currently uses four and a half of the PLAYSTATION 3’s six cores of the cell chip. This just makes me think and wonder, how much is used by the current games and what will the future games use. This is an awesome time to be a PS3 gamer. Guerrilla Games’ Technical Directer, Michiel van der Leeuw mentions, “Sony basically has an international forum for sharing character technology, animation tools and graphics shaders. ~ We’ve even taken a few tricks directly from the Resistance guys at Insomniac, and we’ve even been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica.” News Source. Jamhai was right. There are eight cores, one is disabled, one is reserved. Six available for games.
mmmm, i believe MGS4 has the best graphics yet for any console game.
