E3 08: 80GB PLAYSTATION 3 Coming Back
Over at the E3 2008 Sony Press Conference, Jack Tretton tells us that “Starting in September, we will launch an 80 gigabye PS3 that has the same functionality as the current 40 gigabye PS3″. The 80 gigabyte PS3 will go for a mere $399.99. They are doing this because of user demand for the 80 gigabyte system.

Well to me this is a bad move on Sonys part the reason the 80 gig sold was because of the BC not the bigger hard drive. You can buy a 250 one for a 100 dollars and so the 80 really is not that great on the other hand the BC is and I think Sony should keep it in. But I guess Sony knows what people want more then I want. Which if people like me are buying the PS3 should we not me right not them?

As I have looked into it more it seems that its possible they are completely phasing out the b/c ps3 in time leaving just the standard core pack.
I dont know if this is true as to me it doesnt make sense calling it “core” then if its the only one to choose from. We will see, but they need to keep a b/c version.

lol, seriously I think they misunderstood why there is a demand for the 80gb. it’s not so much about the space, but more about the backwards compat.

I’m not sure why they mean “coming back”. I know it was phased out until the MGS bundle but the 80gb exists still. Its not gone. Maybe they are referring to a standalone 80gb with no bundle then fine, but its still not b/c so that isnt really coming back.
Curious to see how they differentiate the two.

This doesn’t really surprise me. Nowadays, the 80GB HDD is probably just as cheap as a 40GB HDD. Why not upgrade the PS3 to 80GB minimum?

Well you can still buy the 80gb MGS bundle.
This bundle only increases the storage size since “same functionality” means no backwards ps2 compatability.
