Gamer Starts Online Petition for No PS3 Game Installs

PlayStation 3

Reader Joe Rivera has sent an e-mail alerting us of a new petition he has started titled “PlayStation 3: No More Game Installs”. The reason we are posting this petition is because, like Joe said “you guys understand what I mean in this petition, so I forwarded to you first”.

In the petition, Joe states “Hard-drive installs are not necessary as you can clearly see in games such as Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Unreal Tournament III. These are some of the highest rate games and they do not require a hard-drive installation.”

He goes on to say “Our space is being taken up, and time is being wasted. We use our PlayStation 3’s as a media hub rather than just a gaming system. We would like to be able to store movies, music, and pictures on our console, without a new 5GB being added to our space every time a new game releases.”

Truer words haven’t been spoken. Hit the jump to sign the petition.

[PlayStation 3: No More Game Installs] [Thanks Joe!]

    @ Sal

Thanks. BTW, Gravatar sucks. Took me forever to get a decent image it wouldn’t enlarge to death.

HDDs fail because they spin too much. A larger install, 4-5GB, means the hard drive doesn’t have to work as hard and gives it a much longer life. Solid State Disks (SSD a.k.a FlashDrives) are getting bigger and better, but they are still very pricey. http://www.siliconsystems.com sells a 32GB SSD and I’m on the verge of shelling out the $$$ for one. SSD are by no means infallible either, but they are much more reliable and live longer. Here’s the SSD URL for any that are interested. No I don’t work for them. http://www.siliconsystems.com/resources/DataSheetsGrp.aspx?DSCategory=SiliconDrive%20II%20SATA%202.5&TicketID=27c49b61-a89b-44e6-aef6-59ccd1e67f14)

@jamhai – Sony doesn’t know how large an install will be, so they can’t warn you. The game developers are in charge of that, which is why the install size is show on the back of game cases. However, Sony could place restrictions on the game developers to limit the size. Like I said before, 1-2GB is fine with me.

I never thought I’d see the day when I ran out of room on my HDD for a new PS game. As Bill Gates once said “640K ought to be enough for anybody.”

I have an off topic question. How do you guys get those avatars? There is no option in my profile for one.

Yet another online petition that has its heart in the right place but doesn’t seem to take in mind that developers just might need those HDDs to make their masterpiece.

However, I agree that games like Devil May Cry should not need a 5G install and it is strange that games like Heavenly Sword, CoD4, Uncharted and others didn’t require an install. I can see why a game like MGS4 might need it but not DMC.

And as everyone else has already said a 1 to 2GB install is one thing but 5GB is just a crying shame.

Maybe instead of a petition that says no game installs how about a mandate for Sony to demand that no install is over 2GB? Chances are that it won’t happen. Like a pimple-faced virgin in high school Sony is willing to take what they can get and will make friends with anyone willing to sit next to them.

Same I will be ok if they kept the Installs to a 1-2gig limit. But hopefully my HDD wont fail for another like 4-5years. I know the xbox360 HDD fails like in 1-2years.

  6. Sony never warned me all these games would require 4-5 GB installs when i bought my 40GB PS3. Why should I have to spend additional money on a bigger hard drive to play additional games?

@FiftyQuid : I agree. 1-2 GB installs are perfectly fine with me, but 3-5 GB is excessive.

I bought a 40GB because I didn’t want the larger 80HDD. Have you ever lost 80GB of data? It sucks. I can’t imagine losing 100GB, 200GB, or 300GB. I’m around PC’s and UNIX servers all day and one thing I can guarantee you is this: It is not a matter of IF an HDD will fail, but WHEN it will fail. In regards to the petition, I don’t really mind the installs. It gives me time to read the manual, grab a sandwich or get a new beer. However, a 5GB install is too much. That’s 1/8 my HDD for one game. I’d be okay with game installs if they kept them under 1-2GB.

What a joke this petition is.

Instead of Bawwwing just install a new HDD if size is a concern. Some people fail to understand why the hard drive was placed in there the first place.

Blu-ray’s transfer rate isn’t very fast thus it would cause some major loading time, so the hard drive was placed in it to speed it up.

I wont be signing this petition.

To be honest, I don’t mind the installs. I bought a 320gig harddrive so that would last me for at least 50games if they are around 3-4gigs. But I really hate them being so big *Cough*DevilMayCry4*Cough*. I know a lot of normal people don’t how to replace there harddrive, but it does say it on the ps3 manual how you can replace the HDD. I really dont mind because a install is once while changing disc are FOREVER! lets hope dev are start to make the installs smaller.
