PLAYSTATION 3 Firmware v2.42 Now Up

Eric Lempel, Director of PLAYSTATION Network Operations, has updated us on the PlayStation.Blog alerting us that firmware update v.2.42 is now available for download.
He says that the update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software. We've also been tipped that it improves trophy loading times.
[Firmware (v2.42) Now Available]

I wish it moved the notification message box to the bottom-center of the screen and made it smaller.
I was watching a rented movie from the PSN Video Store the other day (Lars and the Real Girl; great film) and that huge notification box kept popping up over and over again showing people getting on and offline. It became quite distracting to the point where I thought about signing off or finding a way to disable the notification alerts (didn’t bother looking but something tells me you can’t).
Hopefully they’ll eventually realize this is too big and distracting and at least reduce the size or at least move it to another part of the screen.
incredibilistic - I do think you can disable those notifications……
Although I do agree with you in that the size of them are too big….
@ incredibilistic - Yes, you can disable those notifications. I have them turned off on my system. I have no problem with the size or location.
So was “Life With Playstation” included with this update?
Life With Playstation was probably made possible through this update an it will be available to download from the Playstation Store later.
Great… another 5GB install.
It’s weird, I hear people always saying the installation is long for firmware updates, even Matt says it as well. I have yet to experience long downloads or installs for firmware updates. Maybe I’m just lucky? My firmware updates usually take 2-5 minutes to download, and another 3 to install.

I guess you haven’t noticed that Sony has a fixation with placing almost everything in the top right corner? The date and time is there, the (almost useless) Information Bar is there, the battery life of the SIXAXIS/Dual Shock is there and of course the notifications.
If you have an HDTV maybe they look a little smaller for you but I can’t imagine there’s that much of a difference. I just wish Sony had a little more originality when it comes to the notification as it’s just a gray box that fades in and out.
By comparison, the 360 notifications are MUCH smaller and animate when they appear/disappear.
I don’t want them to overdo it but something a little more pleasing to the eye than (what I still consider to be) a huge charcoal-gray box.
Does anyone use that P.O.S. Information Bar? I turned it off as soon as possible.
@incredibilistic - Maybe Sony didn’t want to be sued by Microsoft? Microsoft puts everything in the bottom right-hand corner. MS Outlook notifications, Clock, Calendar, Mini-icons, etcetera.
Is it possible to trademark or copyright a corner? LOL.
