Sega’s Rise to Fame This Generation

Sega, the company behind the Sonic series we all know and love, is stepping their game up this generation. They’re really becoming one of the publishers to look out for this time around because they seem to be throwing out great games like it’s nothing. Now with great games come a bit of alright to bad games under their radars as well, but we can’t all be perfect.
Sega has already released Valkyria Chronicles on the PlayStation 3 late last year and it was an instant hit, averaging an 87 on Metacritic, becoming the probably one of best SRPGs of the generation.
The deal with Platinum Games was a big hit for Sega, raking in MadWorld and Bayonetta. One of the two games, MadWorld, which has already released has averaged an 82 on Metacritic, probably being one of the best Wii games to date. The other game, Bayonetta, which is still on the way looks way more than promising. We remarked the latest trailer to be “completely insane”. And that’s a good thing.
Sega’s cooking up on a storm in the RPG front as well. They announced their spy RPG Alpha Protocol in development at Obsidian Entertainment last year and it’s coming along to be the modern-day Mass Effect. Obsidian’s already known for their excellent work on Knights of the Old Republic II for the PC and Xbox, so Alpha Protocol is known to be in great hands.
Sega just announced another RPG partnership between them and tri-Ace for a new Japanese RPG titled End of Eternity for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was recently revealed in a new trailer and screenshots and is looking to hit the sweet spot for RPG fans. The developer, tri-Ace, is also a great RPG developer known for games such as Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile, which have both received critical acclaim by role-playing gamers.
You’d think that’s all Sega has to offer this time around, but alas, you’re wrong. Sega’s PlayStation 3 exclusive, Yakuza 3, was recently released in Japan and was quite a hit. Besides the excellent Famitsu review (38/40), it also sold 500,000 copies in just about three weeks.
Getting off the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 category, Sega are also publishing one of the Nintendo Wii’s most highly anticpated titles. That’s High Voltage’s The Conduit, a first-person shooter Wii owners have been aching for. Heck, I even want to try it out, but I don’t own a Wii.
Sega’s also holding down one of the best fighters this gen so far next to Street Fighter IV and that’s Virtual Fighter 5.
Sega’s really stepping their game up this generation and I just want to take the time to applaud them on that. I hope to see even greater things from the already great Sega.
