BioWare on Activision’s PS3 Threat: “Silly”

Greg Zeschuk, co-founder of Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer BioWare, has said today that Activision’s threats of stopping support for PlayStation 3 if Sony doesn’t lower the price is just “silly”, acknowledging the importance of the PlayStation name and brand.
“I don’t think it’s really fair to poke fun at Sony,” Zeschuk told CVG. “Certainly the Wii’s been a massive success and Sony’s probably not going as fast as they thought it would be but I think that they’re starting to make the right moves and the software’s coming along.
“I think it’s silly to be saying you’re not going to support Sony. The brand itself is still huge and there are millions of [users] out there.”
PlayStation 3 has currently sold 22 million units worldwide in comparison to Xbox 360’s nearly 30 million. With a year difference between the consoles’ launch dates, we’d say there’s nothing wrong with the userbase for PlayStation 3 and that Activision’s comments are indeed “silly”. Although, a price drop would never hurt for potential buyers.

I’m glad someone spoke out about this. Should Sony drop the price? Yes, but they shouldn’t be strong-armed into doing and certainly shouldn’t be threatened to do it just because Activision says so.
And when you post the numbers like that, 22 million to 30 million, the race is a lot closer than many people will recognize considering the fact that Microsoft launched an entire year before Sony. That’s not to say Sony hasn’t done their fair share of shooting themselves in the foot but dropping the Playstation name, as BioWare pointed out, is a not only premature but childish.
Activision hasn’t sold hardware for decades and all of a sudden they want to dictate to Sony what they should be doing with their hardware.
Still, I hope Sony’s does drop the price and does so this year. They’d be smart to drop it right around October. While Best Buy is giving away some awesome bundles I’d like to see a $299 PS3. I’d REALLY like to see a $249 PS3 but you can put that in the silly column along with Activision’s comments.
