PS3 Firmware v3.0 to be the last major update this year

Apparently, the upcoming v3.0 firmware for PlayStation 3 is going to be the last major firmware update for 2009, according to PlayStation Network Director of Operations, Eric Lempel.
“You know, I wouldn’t say that or sure just yet because we are working on some things,” Lempel told G4. “But this is a big and significant update, so you would be correct to assume that [it's the last major update for 2009].”
There will most likely be some tiny updates following after v3.0. That means if you’re still waiting for cross-game chat like me, there’s still hope that they’ll release an update with only that feature after v3.0.
PS3 Firmware 3.0 Last Major 2009 Update, But More Tiny Updates Likely [G4]

Cross-game chat would be nice and, I would like to think, maybe spark some official Sony headset sales. Why they continue to deny us of this feature is beyond me. I find it hard to be excited about an update when there are thousands, if not millions, of fans clamoring for features that they seem to continue to ignore. Maybe they think we’ll forget about it.
While I think the update is pretty significant I don’t think it’s so big that they have to take the rest of the year off. No disrespect to Lempel and the rest of the PSN crew but when you really think about it all they’ve done is create really fancy URLs to places you can get to without using the new promotional “tiles”. Yes, the animated backgrounds are pretty snazzy (something I’ve been screaming about for years) and the updated status indicator at the top is nice (if long overdue) but I really don’t think they can call this such a major update that they wait another 6+ months before the next major update.
Hopefully there’s some stuff they haven’t announced yet like maybe some new visual themes when listening to music or a few new picture slideshow themes (although now that they released that photo album app they’ll probably never update the native photo viewer). My hope is that the pop-up controls for music and DVD’s has been redesigned. When you press triangle during a movie you get the same boring set of controls on the left of the screen; no different than what the PS2 looked like (although I think you clicked Start or Select).
I also don’t understand the avatar deal. Are they purposely ignoring Home? Seems like this would be a great opportunity to introduce Home avatars to the XMB. Oh well, I guess we can’t expect every decision Sony makes to be sensible. We still don’t have cross-game chat.
