Happy 15th Birthday, PlayStation!

PlayStation 3

playstation-15-anniversary

Fifteen years ago on December 3, 1994, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan released a system known as the PlayStation in Japan. From there on out, the platform rocked the gaming world evolving today into the PlayStation 3.

Thanks to the PlayStation brand, we’ve seen countless hits like Kingdom Hearts, Gran Turismo, Ico, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot… all these wouldn’t have been possible were it not for Sony and their daring leap to video game platforms on a disc-based system.

Look how successful the brand has become fifteen years later. Sony has gotten up a celebratory website detailing their consoles’ history (it’s all in Japanese, though), which is worth a look.

Man, I remember when I first got my PlayStation – the hours I would spend on that thing. Crash Bandicoot was the first game I remember getting, then there were gems like Spyro, Tony Hawk, Final Fantasy and Resident Evil. It was a great time to be a gamer and it still is today.

Happy 15th, PlayStation. We look forward to fifteen years more.

By the way, that logo is HOT!!!! Love it, love it, love it.

Not sure why they didn’t make an English version (can’t we celebrate too) but it’s still ultra cool.

The first game that really got me excited about the PSOne was Ridge Racer and so with every purchase of a Playstation system since then I’ve made RR my first purchase. And although the PS2 and PS3 versions sucked (in my opinion; the PSP version was rock solid) it became a tradition unto myself to usher in my new Playstation console with an RR game.

And not to start a flame war but Microsoft owes a lot to Sony because they took a chance on breaking into a market that belonged by Sega and Nintendo with no room for anyone else. When Atari (with the Jaguar and Lynx handheld), NEC (TurboGrafx and TurboGrafx-16 handheld) and the 3D0 failed it seemed illogical for any other company to make any attempt to try and compete with Sega or The Big N. Then Sony entered the market and proved that a company with no experience in the videogame console business could be widely successful.

If not for the PS brand I truly believe that Microsoft would never even dream of entering the market but because of Sony’s success they wanted a piece of that pie too.

What will the next 15 years bring? Will OnLive take over the industry forcing Sony and MS to take the Sega route and publish only software? Or will Nintendo eventually sell to either Sony or MS thereby changing the market forever?

  3. Happy Birthday PlayStation! I Can remember the day I got the original PS1 (and PS2 and PS3 too), and Resident Evil was my first game I played on it, apart from the “Demo 1″ disk which I actually still own.

First game for the PS2 I think was Crazy Taxi, and PS3 was Resistance (bleh).

    Good times!
