Square Enix CEO unsure on Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy XIII only released in Japan around three weeks ago, and is all set for a March release in the west. However, Square Enix President and CEO Yoichi Wada has told Edge Online that he’s unsure whether or not Square Enix is going to continue to create “this type of game”.
“I believe Final Fantasy XIII is going be something special,” Wada said, “and that it’s going to be well received by the audience. But whether we are going to continue to internally create this type of game remains to be seen, because I actually feel that the team that was involved with Final Fantasy XIII should next move on to create and generate some ‘next generation’ forms of play. Internally and externally I feel there’s an expectation of Square Enix to offer something new, and I really think that the Final Fantasy team could create something completely different, but at the moment they’re strictly catering to the particular audience they have now.”
Yocihi Wada also took the time to address Keiji Inafune’s remark at the Tokyo Game Show that “Japan is over.”
“To say something so extreme is surprising. I’m surprised Capcom allowed Inafune to say that at TGS,” Wada told Edge, “My message by proxy for the Japanese developers who would have heard such a discouraging message is that if they are willing today, then they definitely have the capability to change and face tomorrow. I’ll say that it’s a challenge. But it’s very strange to have such an extremely pessimistic view.”

What evolution ? If by “evolution” he means something like Wii – then im not buying it. We love standard Final Fantasy series – millions of people love it the way it is – and i hope SE will notice that.
Btw. About BioWare – what evolution did they mean ? Evolving from baldur’s gate’s gameplay to almost-shooter gameplay of Mass Effect 2 ? I guess i prefer old kind of unevolved games then…

If ever there was a wrong thing to say, this was it.
The popularity of the Final Fantasy series will never die.
All the cool games come from Japan.
If they stop Final Fantasy, that is a huge mistake.

Somehow i think the comment that that BioWare guy said about JRPGs not having a certain evolution is getting to Wada.

I think you’r right; it most likely was that Bioware statement which set him off. I just hope Wada realises that Bioware’s statement was just a ‘fanboy’ esque plug for their own games, and nothing more.
People love Final Fantasy, as it is – and I hope that underneath silly statements and bickering from developers – Wada knows this.

I really hope Final Fantasy doesn’t end up leaving us. I understand that there is an ending for everything, but i grew up with playing Final Fantasy games. I’m now 26 and still a hardcore Final Fantasy fanatic. This is one franchise i can honestly say that when it does end, it won’t go down well with fans. Wada better be prepared for that.

idiotic thing for him to say; a company does not just stop making it’s flagship series, specially when its one of the most loved and famous series in the entire industry.
What does he mean by “next generation” forms of play? It sounds sinister to me, but who reall knows?
All I have to say to Wada is that “this type of game” (FF) is something which millions of gamers adore and will continue to, and it is exactly what SE is famous for. if he wants to start making “other” titles, then fine, I welcome them with open arms – but this does not mean “moving on” and ignoring the hand that feeds you.
